Our Multi-Generational Thanksgiving Getaway: Stillwater at The Lodges of Chateau Cove

During a memorable Thanksgiving holiday, our family, ranging from our 91-year-old grandmother to our 10-month-old infant, experienced the true joy of a barrier-free vacation at “Stillwater,” a fantastic home within The Lodges of Chateau Cove. From lively family game nights to cozy movie nights watching family videos, and delicious feasts, everyone could comfortably, safely, and joyfully participate.

While Stillwater isn’t 100% fully wheelchair accessible, it offers an impressive array of features that make it incredibly accommodating. Wheelchair users can easily enter the home and fully engage in all family activities. While some assistance might be needed for bathing and cooking due to a step-in shower and limited maneuverability around standard countertops (especially for manual wheelchairs), this home excels at providing the basic universal design elements that allow all guests to eat, sleep, and play with ease, ultimately fostering a truly joyful experience.

Explore Accessible Branson: Beyond Your Rental

Branson, MO, is a hub of family-friendly adventure, and many attractions are surprisingly accessible. From scenic hiking trails to world-class live shows (most offering accessible seating and entrances), there’s something for everyone.

  • Fritz’s Adventure: An interactive indoor adventure park offering unique and engaging experiences.
  • Silver Dollar City: This charming 1880s-themed amusement park is a must-visit, especially during the holidays when it transforms into a dazzling display of lights and festive activities. We observed many wheelchair users, both adults and children, enjoying the park, confirming its commitment to accessibility.
  • Table Rock Lake Activities: In the warmer months, pontoon boats are available for rent, offering a fantastic way to experience the lake. We easily booked our rental through the marina at Indian Point.

The Lodges of Chateau Cove: Location & Community Amenities

Stillwater is ideally situated on a mountain bluff within a community of similar homes, each boasting breathtaking lake and sunset views. The location is incredibly convenient, just 15-20 minutes from both Silver Dollar City and the heart of Branson, putting all the shows, shopping, and cool attractions within easy reach for the entire family.

Beyond the individual homes, the community offers fantastic amenities:

  • Two Pools: One indoor and one outdoor, perfect for year-round enjoyment.
  • Small Playground: A great spot for younger family members to burn off some energy.

Universal Design in Action: Stillwater’s Thoughtful Features

Keyless, zero step entry with lever style door handle simplifies and makes home entry easier for families.

One of the most impressive aspects of “Stillwater” is its commitment to universal design, which benefits everyone, not just those with mobility challenges.

  • Ramp and Zero-Step Entrance: Unlike many multi-level homes that might offer an elevator but fall short at the entrance, Stillwater provides both a ramp and a zero-step entrance. This means absolutely anyone can easily enter the home, regardless of mobility device or luggage. It was even amusing to see some guests, perhaps out of habit, opt for the steps, forgetting the effortless access the ramp provided!
  • Wide Hallways and Doorways: Experience true freedom of movement! The wide hallways and doorways are a refreshing change, allowing for easy navigation, even when moving larger items or a play yard from room to room without disassembly.
  • Lever-Style Door Handles: Found throughout the home, these handles require minimal dexterity to operate, making entry and exit simple for everyone.
  • Keyless Entry: The front door’s touchpad keyless entry system simplifies your stay and eliminates the stress of managing physical keys, requiring only minimal dexterity.
  • Consistent, Slip-Resistant Flooring: With the exception of carpet on the stairs (a good safety intervention!), the same slip-resistant flooring material runs throughout the home. There are no thresholds or transition pieces between rooms, making it incredibly easy for anyone using mobility devices, including infants in walkers, or those with a shuffled gait, canes, or walkers.

Accessible Main Floor Living: Eat, Sleep, Play Together

“Stillwater” truly shines with its accessible main level, ensuring the entire family can gather for essential activities:

  • Main Floor Primary Bedroom and Accessible Bathroom: The main floor features an accessible primary bedroom with ample space around the bed and within the bathroom. While the shower isn’t roll-in or curbless, it boasts double doors for easy entry and a vertical grab bar for assistance while stepping in. A unique feature is the removable shower seat, which can be positioned on either the back or side wall, closest to the removable showerhead. The sink offers a partial roll-under clearance of approximately 29 inches, with a sloped panel covering the plumbing.
  • Varying Doorway Widths: Interestingly, while the accessible bathroom and laundry room on the main level offer ample 36-inch clearance (or 35-inch inside the door jamb), some other doorways on this level vary.
  • Integrated Living Spaces: The kitchen, main living area, and accessible bedroom and bathroom are all on the main level, allowing the entire family to eat, relax, and socialize together. Even though the game room is in the basement, everyone can still share meals, enjoy movie nights, and simply converse in shared spaces.
  • Back Porch Access: The threshold to the back porch has about a 2-inch step to get outside and more to re-enter.

Rental Management and Added Conveniences

This home was managed by a national rental company, Unwind Luxury Vacations, which meant less personalized customer service, but instructions were clear and organized via email. We only contacted them for minor maintenance needs (like air filters and plumbing issues) and to confirm provided amenities.

The Bonuses:

  • Kid-Friendly Amenities: The rental company thoughtfully provided a play yard and high chair, significantly reducing the amount of gear our family needed to travel with – a huge plus for families with young children and grandparents!
  • Family-Friendly Environment: The home was designed to be comfortable and enjoyable for all ages, making it perfect for multi-generational gatherings.

Important Note on Essentials: We are noticing a trend where many rentals provide only bare minimum essentials. Always read reviews and check the amenities list carefully, including the fine print, when planning your trip. You might need to bring your own toiletries (bath soap, shampoo, dishwasher pods, laundry detergent) and extra paper towels, trash bags, and toilet paper.

Baby equipment provided and wide dooryways to maneuever equipment with ease.

Enhancing the Guest Experience: Recommendations for Vacation Rental Owners

While “Stillwater” excelled in many areas, here are some recommendations for vacation home owners looking to further enhance accessibility and overall guest satisfaction:

  • Varied and Thoughtful Lighting: Offer a range of lighting options, from lamps to direct or task lighting, ensuring all bulbs are the same temperature (2700-3000K is generally ideal for visibility and safety). Dimmers are a fantastic feature, providing softer lighting for those sensitive to bright overhead lights.
  • Well-Stocked Kitchen: Provide a good variety of pots and pans (including baking sheets and basic frying pans like for bacon) and at least one quality cutting knife.
  • Curbless Shower: Incorporate at least one curbless or zero-barrier/no-step entrance shower. We know of other homes in this community that already offer this fantastic feature!
  • Vertical Grab Bars for Thresholds: Adding a vertical grab bar to assist with stepping over thresholds (e.g., to the back porch or into a garage) would greatly improve safety and ease of use.
  • Comprehensive Welcome Guide: Create a manual or guide with “how-to” instructions for the home’s features, recommendations for local attractions, and important contact numbers for management (easily accessible without needing a phone or computer) and local emergency clinics.

The Power of Universal Design: Maximizing Rental Demand

As you can see, integrating universal design principles into vacation rentals significantly broadens their appeal to a wider market, accommodating guests of all ages and abilities. When basic universal design features are thoughtfully included – such as primary living spaces on the main level (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and laundry), a zero-step entrance, and at least one curbless shower and roll-under sink – you’re maximizing the number of potential renters for your home. This alone will make a vacation rental in high demand.

Meet the Blogger

Hi, I’m Tiffany Dill!

As a mom with profound hearing loss, I know firsthand the beauty and chaos of navigating life with young kids, extended family, and all the little surprises along the way. At Blue Day 2, I’m all about creating spaces and experiences that bring joy to families of all ages and abilities. From home designs that work seamlessly for everyone to sharing my favorite picks from my LTK and Amazon shops, I’m here to make life and travel simpler, more accessible, and filled with joy. Stick around for plenty of inspiration, a little less stress, and a whole lot more fun as we embrace life’s perfectly imperfect adventures together!

Let's Get Personal!

Click on the tabs below to learn more fun facts about me. Do we have anything in common?

Tiffany, you've been married to Andrew for over 16 years now. Any special anniversary traditions?

Oh, absolutely! Every year since we got married in September 2008, we’ve worn the exact same clothes we left our wedding reception in. Yup, I'm talking my gold cocktail dress, wedding jewelry shining, and Andrew rocking his wedding suit. We’re not about to let that tradition slide. It’s been 16 years of pure anniversary magic. I guess you could say we’re "stuck" in our wedding day outfits, but in the best way possible!

Completing an Ironman and earning a doctorate in occupational therapy in the same year sounds intense. How did you pull that off?

Intense is one way to put it! But honestly, raising two energetic boys might just be the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The Ironman and doctorate were definitely tough, but mom life? That’s the ultimate endurance race. It’s the one that keeps me—and even Andrew—on our A-game, every single day. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, though. There’s nothing like their opposite personalities and they surprise you with so much joy even in the chaos, and that's where my energy goes—no finish line required.

You’ve set a pretty ambitious goal with playing ‘Sweet By and By’ on the piano. What’s the story there?

Ah, yes! I miss playing the piano. I started playing piano since second grade and even made it to an advanced level through college. But now, my life goal is to master Sweet By and By (again) before I leave earth. It’s definitely a stretch, but that’s the fun part, right? First, though, I need to add a piano in a room I’ve been dreaming of since we built our home. Playing piano was always my outlet. Until then, running is my stress reliever.

Hidden talent alert: You can read lips. How’d you discover that one?

Oh, this one goes way back! When I was four years old, I managed to fool five different audiologists during my hearing tests. It wasn’t until a doctor noticed that I wasn’t repeating what she said when she turned around (back in those days they didn’t cover their lips nor did they have tinted windows in the sound booth)! I had spinal meningitis at 13 months, which nearly took my life and left me in a coma for a week. As a result, I had to start over on a few developmental milestones and missed a lot of early speech and language development. Thanks to years of speech therapy and a knack for lip-reading, I still manage to fool people with my profound hearing loss. It comes in handy when someone wants to know what the ref said on the field or TV, or if I’m in a crowded room and want to eavesdrop—just kidding. Sort of.

On the flip side, what are some things you’re not a fan of?

Confined spaces. Cilantro. Olives. Blue cheese. I could live without all of those. And don’t even get me started on being stuck inside for hours at a time. I'm much more suited to wide-open spaces, the great outdoors, and pretty much anything that involves fresh air.

We all know you’re a planner, but what do you hold closest to your heart?

Sentiments. They’re irreplaceable. There’s something about the things that carry emotional weight—whether it’s a moment or an object—that just can’t be duplicated. I’ve learned to really appreciate the simple, meaningful stuff in life. In fact, our Christmas tree is adorned with over 20 years of ornaments symbolizing memories from a loss of loved ones to trips and even sour times. It’s like finding joy in the simple little things whether they are happy or sad or even bad memories.

You’re a busy mom and entrepreneur, but how do you manage to squeeze in family time?

Time? What’s that? Ha! Honestly, there’s just not enough of it. And the thing is, we can’t get it back. So I prioritize memory-making with my family. That’s my top priority. Whether it’s hiking, running, biking, traveling, or exploring the great outdoors with my boys, I live for those moments. In fact, I devote one day off work a week to be with my little guys and my husband and I carve out a weekly date night.
